3 Reasons Your Old Air Conditioner is Costing You Money

September 28, 2015

If your energy bills continue to increase each year, above what you think should be based on increases from your utility company, you might need a new air conditioner. Older units significantly increase your repair as well as energy costs. Old or damaged air conditioners are less efficient, and can be especially problematic in warm regions like Jacksonville, FL. where reliance on the system is essentially year-round.

Your Air Conditioner Uses R-22

It has been determined that the traditional R-22 refrigerant has a negative impact on the ozone layer. To protect the environment, the HVAC industry has shifted toward alternative and safer refrigerants which do not result in ozone depletion.

R-22 is still being phased out, and there are still many air-conditioners that use the refrigerant. Since it is becoming a scarce commodity, HVAC companies typically charge more for providing the refrigerant. If your AC uses R-22 and need to be recharged, it could become quite an expensive service job. Older models might not be able to use newer refrigerants without significant upgrades, which too could be costly.

It Is the Wrong Size for Your Home

An improperly sized air conditioner, whether too large or too small, can result in higher energy bills. In both cases, your system will not perform efficiently. Your HVAC technician will be able to determine if your system has the capacity to adequately cool and heat your home.

The SEER is Lower than 13

The SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) describes the relationship between your air conditioner’s cooling output and the total amount of energy input during that particular period. A higher SEER rating means better efficiency, and modern air conditioners typically feature SEER ratings of 13 or higher.

If you are using an older air conditioner, however, the SEER rating could be 10 or even lower. This means you are wasting energy constantly as the system attempts to achieve comfortable temperatures.

If you are concerned about your older air conditioner, consider upgrading it. The initial cost will be worth it in terms of reduced energy bills and the money you will save from no longer needing frequent repairs or having to replace damaged parts.
