4 Things You Can Do Before Calling an HVAC Professional

May 20, 2016

There is nothing wrong with wanting to take care of your Jacksonville, Florida, home without the cost of hiring a professional. While there are many reasons that an HVAC professional should be the one to fix, repair, and service your unit, there are a few things you can do yourself. This approach will help eliminate unnecessary calls, waiting, and expenses for you, especially during those hot summer months.

Check Your Air Filters

If the air blowing into your home isn’t very cool or is barely blowing at all, check the filters. Once the filter is clogged with dirt and dust, it can make your air conditioner work less efficiently. Check your filter monthly and change it out at least every 90 days to avoid this problem.

Check Your Thermostat

It’s getting warmer and warmer in your house, but the air conditioner isn’t coming on. Take a look at the thermostat first. Make sure it’s on and set correctly. If it’s not on, and it won’t turn on, change the batteries. That may do the trick and get you cooled off in no time.

Check Your Power

When the thermostat is working like it should but your unit still isn’t turning on, it’s time to look at your power source. First, check the disconnect switch on the outside unit and the switch on the indoor air handler. If neither of those is the problem and your whole house has power, check your breaker box. You may just need to flip the circuit breaker.

Check Your Drain Line

The unit is on, but it’s not cooling your home down very quickly or at all. This time, take a look at the drain line. You should have a pan under your unit to catch condensation. If you don’t see any water, you may have a clog. It’s a good time to notify your HVAC technician for a more detailed check.
