How Heat Pumps Work

December 13, 2015

Temperature control has a huge impact on air quality in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and a heat pump can be the perfect answer for moderating your indoor temperature efficiently. Heat pumps are growing in popularity especially in temperate climates like ours. These systems can result in real energy savings. But how do they work, and what makes them so efficient?

Heat Cycling

A heat pump moves heat from your home during the summer and cycles that warm air back outside. During the cooler periods, it is able to extract warm air from outside and use it to heat your home. Heat pumps use reversal valve, which allows the pump to easily switch between heating and cooling. This is quite unlike the traditional central air system that needs to have a separate furnace for heating purposes.

A conventional heating system generates heat on its own through a continuous cycle of processing air that flows over the coils that contain the refrigerant. This process uses more energy and, therefore, costs more than the heat pump, which just moves rather than generates heat. A heat pump can bring you more savings than a traditional system.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Specifically, geothermal heat pumps have an even higher rate of efficiency since they draw heat energy from the ground where temperatures are warmer. This is different from how heat pumps and air conditioners operate as they use the surrounding air, which will require more energy to convert it to suitable indoor temperatures. Since the ground temperatures stay relatively constant, a geothermal heat pump has a constant supply that it can use to keep your home comfortable.

Not only is the geothermal heat pump more energy efficient, it also eliminates the risk of harmful air being drawn into your home, which is a common concern with an air-source heat pump or central air conditioning. This is a very important factor as indoor air quality is an increasing cause for concern today.
