Why There’s Ice on Your Air Conditioner

December 5, 2015

There are many factors that affect the performance of the air conditioner in your Jacksonville, Florida home. Ice on the condenser coil is one of those factors. If there is ice on your air conditioner it is best to contact your HVAC contractor who can properly assess and remedy the problem.

Blocked Airflow

Hopefully this is the reason, because, in many cases, all it takes is replacing a filter. When air isn’t flowing well enough through the coils of an AC system, the humidity in the air collects, and eventually freezes, which only worsens the airflow and encourages more ice to build up. You may also want to ensure you have the correct type of filter for your system.

Refrigerant Issues

The essential component that makes air conditioning possible is the refrigerant — a chemical that collects and releases heat. Just like in automobile AC systems, it’s possible that over time, whether through age or wear and tear, your refrigerant level becomes low as a result of a leak. Just like with restricted airflow, this reduces efficiency and can cause ice to form in the unit. You should only trust the repair of this kind of issue to a professional, who is specially certified to handle refrigerants.

Dirty AC Coils

Dirt or residue on the condenser coils will affect the ability of the refrigerant to act on the air that passes over. If the air doesn’t pass over the coils fast enough, it will cause the moisture that generally collects in that area to freeze. Anything that restricts the flow of air in the system will affect its ability to function in many ways.
