History of Jacksonville Beach

Originally inhabited by the Timucua people, the area around present-day Jacksonville Beach was discovered by French explorers in 1562. When the railroad arrived in the 1880s, enterprising developers set up tents and began to plan a seaside resort named Pablo Beach. The city’s name was changed to Jacksonville Beach in 1925.

Jacksonville Beach drew worldwide attention in 1922 when pilot James H. Doolittle broke the transcontinental speed record flying his plane from Jacksonville Beach to San Diego in less than 24 hours.
