Best Plants to Have in Your Home for Good Indoor Air Quality

January 17, 2017

From work to home, we spend a lot of time indoors. This time is extended during the colder months, even in Florida. We recently saw temperatures hovering around 30° F, with windy conditions that made it really cold in the Jacksonville area. That certainly put a dent in outdoor activity plans for many of us. Unfortunately, indoor air can be very unhealthy. Indoor air quality can be affected by volatile organic compounds or VOCs coming from various items in your home. Luckily, these impurities, chemicals and allergens can be filtered out with plants. We’ve put together a list of the three of the best plants for improving the indoor air quality in your home.

Aloe Vera

Succulents like aloe vera have been very popular over the years because of its various benefits. The gel is great for treating sunburns, and the plant itself filters out VOCs like formaldehyde from your indoor air to improve its overall quality.

Garden Mum

This beautiful flower is an air purifying champion. If you want something more than a basic green plant, the garden mum is a great choice that comes in numerous colors and is sure to brighten up any room. Mums are best at removing ammonia and benzene from your air.

Spider Plant

The spider plant is known for being a great plant for beginners as it is hardy and difficult to kill. This plant likes indirect sunlight but doesn’t mind bright rooms. It even puts out a few flowers. Your spider plant will filter out formaldehyde and xylene.

Red-Edged Dracaena

This tall plant, which likes moderate sunshine, can grow as high as your ceiling and adds a nice pop of color with its reddish-purple edges. The dracaena can filter out formaldehyde and trichloroethylene that can be introduced indoors through varnishes and gasoline.

These plants will improve your indoor air quality and beautify your home. If you have other concerns about your indoor air quality or HVAC system, don’t hesitate to give Ocean State Air Conditioning & Heating a call at (904) 574-5619.
