Home humidity ties closely to your indoor air quality and overall health. Without balanced humidity levels, you may experience negative side effects ranging from allergen-like symptoms to property damage. Here are three ways to balance the humidity in your Jacksonville, Florida, home:
Use Ventilation
Ventilation is key for balancing humidity. Many of our daily activities add extra moisture into the air, which can increase the overall humidity. While your HVAC system can handle some of the moisture, it may not be able to remove all of it from the air.
When doing things like boiling water or taking a hot shower, run ventilation fans to whisk away any accumulated humidity. Conveniently, bathrooms and kitchens are the most common location for exhaust fans. Run them for a few minutes after you finish to remove all the humid air.
Add a Dehumidifier
If humidity is a consistent problem in your entire house or just a few rooms, a dehumidifier can make a world of difference. You can choose between a whole-home system or one designed for just a single room.
These systems work by removing moisture from the air and depositing it in a holding tank. Many can be set to certain levels to bring the humidity to your preference or will adjust the humidity automatically. As a result, it’ll keep the humidity at a constant, healthy level.
Purchase Houseplants
Houseplants are a great all-natural alternative to balancing humidity. While they don’t work as well as whole-home dehumidifiers, they can still help to remove moisture from the air and improve indoor air quality. Popular choices include the hardy and non-toxic Boston fern. Place the plants in areas where you experience a lot of humidity. Remember to make sure they receive an adequate amount of sunlight, though.
