Prevent Dirty Ductwork
5 Easy Ways to Prevent Dirty Ductwork in Your Jacksonville Home

November 24, 2014

Protecting the air quality of your Jacksonville home is essential for good overall health and for preventing allergy and asthma symptoms. Dirty ducts can contribute to poor indoor air quality and worsen respiratory illnesses. From mold and bacteria to allergens like pollen and dust mites, pollutants in the ductwork are also factors in HVAC system performance. These tips will help prevent dirty ductwork from maintaining good indoor air quality and lengthen the life-span of your HVAC equipment.

1. Schedule Yearly Maintenance

An annual HVAC system tune-up includes cleaning the interior of the HVAC equipment to improve efficiency and prevent common problems, but it’s also important for protecting ducts against contamination.

In addition to annual maintenance, regularly replacing the air filter is essential to prevent dirty ductwork. Inspect the filter every month and replace it with a high-quality filter when it’s dirty.

2. Seal Ducts During Renovations

When you’re having work performed in your home, tightly seal the return and supply registers with heavy plastic to keep dust and debris out of the ductwork.

3. Dust and Vacuum Often

Dust in your home eventually makes its way through the HVAC system. Dust twice weekly with an electrostatic cloth, followed by a thorough vacuuming. Turn the thermostat to “fan on” while you vacuum, and leave it on for 15 minutes afterward to remove particles sent airborne.

4. Prevent Mold Growth

Mold spores can make their way into ductwork and cause serious air quality issues. Use ventilation fans in the kitchen and bathroom, dry water damage within 24 hours, and insulate ducts in unconditioned areas to prevent condensation.

5. Duct Cleaning

If the ducts need cleaning, hire an experienced professional with the right tools. A reputable contractor will follow the protocol set forth by the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA) or, if the ducts are constructed with fiberglass, the North American Insulation Manufacturer’s Association (NAIMA.)
